How Mercedes turned a 'crazy' idea into gold

A little more than 20 years ago, the Mercedes-Benz W163, dubbed "Job1," rolled off the assembly line at the company's U.S. plant in Vance, Ala., launching the M class.

It was a risky experiment for what was known then as Daimler-Benz: its first manufacturing plant outside Germany, building an entirely new product and its first wholly manufactured SUV.

Mercedes production boss Markus Schaefer said the idea, hatched by former Mercedes boss Juergen Hubbert, was considered "crazy.

Mercedes Takes On Tesla With New Electric Concept Cars

To compete with Tesla, Mercedes-Benz is going all in on electric cars. The company announced on Monday that it will sell electrified versions of all of its models by 2022. The company also showcased a concept car on Tuesday dubbed the Mercedes Concept EQA. While Mercedes hasn't revealed if the the EQA will go into production, it seems likely that it will to compete with Tesla's mass market Model 3.

Volvo invests $520 million into South Carolina plant expansion

By 2021, Volvo will be building its next-generation XC90 three-row crossover at its South Carolina assembly plant, which currently has plans to build the brand new S60 sedan. The plant will tack on $520 million to Volvo’s $1 billion investment which is expected to bring 4,000 jobs to Berkeley County, South Carolina (about 30 miles northwest of Charleston).
